— Welcome to this week’s Episode of AudioTrek … Smokey Mountain Railroad out of Bryson City, North Carolina.

The Smokey Mountain Railroad out of Bryson City follows the Tuckasegee River in two different directions. I took the train that followed the river to Fontana Lake and then up into the Nantahala Gorge. While the train has many car options, I choose the deluxe open-air car. On a Thursday, the car was only half full, so, lots of room to roam around. The day was one of those perfect end of Summer days… in the 70’s with blue skies and clouds.

We did have a short layover at the Nantahala Outdoor Center (white water kayaking and rafting) where we relaxed on some Adirondack chairs along the river for a bit.

We didn’t get to experience the steam engine, but we still had a great time. The rocking and clacking of the car with the sun and breeze on our faces was a really nice way to see this back country.

Want to experience the steam engine? Most weekend excursions are done with the steam engine.

When visiting the Smokey Mountains, the train is a really great way to slow down…
